Willem STUURMAN (Amsterdam 1908 - Amersfoort 1995)
Willem Stuurman is a ceramist who is best known for his work for the Zenith pottery bakery. He learned the trade at various pottery factories, after having followed a course at the Quellinus School in Amsterdam. Recurring themes in his work are references to nature, both plants and animals. From 1927 he worked at various Dutch pottery factories. At the end of the 1930s, Stuurman was working on animal plastics for the Leerdam glass factory. At Zenith in Gouda, from 1931 to 1934, he was also artistic director in addition to being a designer. From 1936 he also ventured into pottery itself and made objects such as letter boxes and mosaics. After moving to Putten, the Stuurman family takes over the pottery workshop 't Kruikje. After the war, the Stuurman family first moved to Leeuwarden and then to Amersfoort in 1949.
