  • Willem Hendrik van den Berg (1886-1970) was born in The Hague. He came from an artistic family; in an interview he jokingly calls himself 'hereditarily burdened'. His father Andries (1852-1944) was a well-known artist and teacher at the Hague Academy. During his education at the Hague Academy he received a royal subsidy for young painters. He received his first commission from Queen Mother Emma who asked him to make a portrait of Prince Hendrik.

After his studies, various exhibitions soon followed, including together with his father and his artist friends David Bautz and Theo Goedvriend. He received rave reviews and people praised his great talent. For study trips he visited Belgium, England, France, Italy and Austria. The subject of his drawings and paintings was often the life of people in the countryside. In 1913 he met the painter Willem van Konijnenburg. Konijnenburg's work made a great impression on him and inspired him to a new way of painting. The lines in his compositions became tighter and the details more precise.
